Rehabilitation of the Fairport Spillway Wall
Objectives:
• replace approximately 450 linear feet of the existing large laid stone canal wall, which had collapsed at several locations, with a new wall and to
• reconstruct 2,585 linear feet of deteriorated canal trailway with a new paved multi-use (pedestrians and bicyclists) canal trailway adjacent to the canal.
• increase visitor use by linking the natural element of the canal to the waterfront and downtown area of the Village of Fairport.
The success of the project of the project cannot be measured strictly by engineering design and construction techniques. The project has its “green factor” with the removal and reuse of the existing stones and the reestablishment of the canal embankments. It has an aesthetic factor by providing improved views of the canal and nautically themed signage and railing.
Certainly engineering and construction innovations were incorporated, but the real factor in the success of the project was engagement of the community and shareholder recognition of the potential the project had to dramatically enhance the Village of Fairport’s canal waterfront. This project is worthy of an award because the project supports Fairport’s efforts to enhance and develop its village center and waterfront as both a destination for local residents and tourists. The end impact for the community becomes bigger than the project.
